The Institute for Public Policy and Leadership at USF Sarasota-Manatee is presenting the 3rd in a series of lectures focusing on growth and economic diversity in the area. Sustainability Theatre – Renewable Energy, Thursday, April 3, 6-7:30pm, Jacaranda Library – 4143 Woodmere Park Blvd. , Venice.

This month’s presentation and film clips are based on the documentary “Transforming Energy – what is our future after oil?” about the hope of renewable energy as a solution to the problems of global warming and the end of cheap oil and gas. The film includes interviews with Hunter Lovins, William McDonough and James Howard Kunstler and even has a small clip on Sarasota County !

Sustainability Theatre is a new program organized by the Extension Service which features film clips and discussions on sustainability issues ranging from local food, climate change, energy and more. Documentary films are then available from the library for check-out. This particular topic will be presented by SNCA’s Bonnie Nickel who is also a Master Conservationist with the Florida House Learning Center . The event is free and open to the public.

Whole Foods Earth Fair, Saturday, April 12, 11am–3pm, Whole Foods Market, 1451 1st Street , Sarasota.  Learn how you can take little steps to make a big difference for the Whole Earth. Event includes environmental exhibits, money-saving coupons and free product samples, recycled-art craft station for kids, Raw Foods demo with Jenna Norwood and Beth Pratt and the chance to win a Whole Foods Market gift basket filled with eco-friendly products.

Green Realtors Green Home Expo, Friday, April 18, Noon-5pm, Sarasota Board of Realtors - 3590 S. Tuttle Ave , Sarasota .   Interested in retro-fitting your home to make it more environmentally friendly and energy efficient? Learning what you can do to ‘go green’ is the first step. Join The Green Realtors Alliance of Sarasota for an educational, fun-filled event that will introduce you to many new products and services in the area to help you incorporate sustainability in your daily life. Hourly presentations will be offered on energy efficiency, Florida Friendly Yards, Indoor Air Quality and HERS (Home Energy Rating system).

The event is free and open to all.  Parking is located nearby at the South Gate Community Center . Continuous shuttles will run to and from the Expo to the parking.

 19th Annual Oscar Scherer Earth Day Celebration , Sunday, April 20, 10am–5pm, Oscar Scherer State Park , US 41 South of Osprey.  Activities include environmental booths, guided walks, story telling, fishing 4 kids, a silent auction, kid’s games and food booths. There’s something for everyone and admission to the park is free.

Summit for Environmental Action.  Those folks at SCOPE are at it again!  They’re bringing together professionals, academics and experts and hosting a summit for environmental solutions.   This is an opportunity for business, government, education, civic, neighborhoods and institutions to learn, ask the hard questions, get knowledgeable answers and to help develop the basis for a local environmental charter.  Friday, February 29, 9:00 A.M. -4:00 p.m., Marie Selby Botanical Gardens.  This event is open for nominations.

January 19: Florida Grassroots Climate Congress.  Energy and legislative representatives will speak on the Governor’s new environmental/energy Executive Orders, the Governor’s Climate Action Team, the upcoming legislative session and policies now under consideration at the Florida Energy Commission.  Three SNCA representatives will be in attendance to coordinate with similar groups from around the state.    

January 30-31: Focus the Nation – Global Warming Solutions for America. Sponsored by the University of Florida and Sarasota County Extension Services.   Join more than 600 other communities nationwide that will simultaneously host speakers and interactive programs on climate and environmental solutions.  The Sarasota Program will explore issues of the 21st Century Urban Ecosystem, Global Warming Solutions, Cool and Efficient Cities Through Tree Canopy, Alternative Energy for the Future, Future Water Management, Agricultural Innovations, and Impacts and Policy of Rising Sea-Levels.   Events kick off Wednesday night, January 30th, with social network intermission, followed by a 7:30 webcast of “The 2% Solution”.  January 31st presents a full-day schedule of interactive presentations, where your questions can be asked and answered.   Locations:  Twin Lakes Park, 6700 Clark Road, 861-5000.  For additional local events being offered at Jacaranda Library, Gulf Gate Library, Sarasota City Hall, Ringling School of Design, New College and Pine View School.   More details can be found at www.focusthenation.org and http://sarasota.extension.ufl.edu/focus.shtml.

November 3: Step It Up.  Greenpeace is working with groups all over America to speak with one voice on November 3rd. Here in Sarasota, participants will gather downtown at Pineapple Park, at the corner of Pineapple Avenue and Lemon Avenue. The rally will be at 4 PM, right after the Sarasota Reading Festival.
